WEATHERING STEEL

2mo, 4-6mo, 12-18mo

Properties

Corten is a highly weatherproof material with a natural-looking, patinating surface which gives the product a vital and individual appearance over time. When handled correctly, the material requires little care and its expressive appearance is long-lasting.

Corten is almost pure steel, but it has a small amount of other substances, which causes a protective patina to develop on the surface of the material when it is exposed to the weather. The initial patina is a maroon shade, which darkens as time passes.

Weathering steel (aka CorTen steel) develops its own protective surface through oxidisation. When weathering steel is exposed to alternating damp and dry conditions, a dense, protective oxide layer, or patina, forms on its surface due to the copper, chrome, nickel and phosphorus in the alloy. For this reason, separate surface treatment is often unnecessary for corten products.

In normal conditions (without accelerating agents), the full oxidisation takes an average of 12-18 months. During this period, before the material has stabilised, some rust may run off the memorial during rain. This completely normal process may cause some staining, particularly in porous materials.

Care and maintenance

The patina prevents the steel from harmful oxidisation, and

markedly slows the rusting process. If the protective layer is damaged, a new patina will form, protecting the steel in the damaged area. If preferred, the darkened patina can be mechanically removed. The oxidation process will then restart, restoring the light maroon colour.

You can remove small blemishes (stains, scratches and chips) by rubbing the surface in a downwards direction with steel wool. We recommend that you always treat the entire surface rather than just the damaged area. Then wet the surface with water and allow it to oxidise.

NATURAL STONE

Properties

We use hard, high-quality natural stone that withstands erosion and features excellent weather-durability. Stone is a natural material and each and every stone is unique.

Surface treatment

Surface treatment affects the degree of polish, smoothness and other aesthetic properties of the stone’s surface. For example, the distinctiveness of the stone’s colour and surface pattern can be affected by changing the degree of polish. In Absentus’s products, the treatment options are polished (strong colour, shiny) and matte (surface polished and then ground to create a dark shade).

Care and maintenance

Natural stone is an extremely durable material which requires minimal care. However, the surfaces should be occasionally cleaned with water and a cloth. A mild detergent solution can be used to remove stubborn stains such as drips from stearin candles. Rinse the surface thoroughly after cleaning.

In addition to natural stone, we use stone composites (e.g. concrete or engineered natural stones):

ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE (UHPC)

Properties

We use UHPC, which consists of extremely fine (particle size of around 0.05mm) natural mineral components (cement and granite or marble components), as well as fibreglass, which guarantees the durability and flexibility of the final product. Most of the aggregate used is recycled, local, crushed concrete created as a by-product of the stone industry. The appearance of the material can be enlivened using natural mineral components with larger particle sizes.

Surface treatment

Cast surface, polished, sand blasted.

All surfaces are impregnated with stone preservative to improve the product’s durability and increase in lifespan. Impregnation protects the stone from erosion, preventing penetration by water and dirt, and the formation of ice. A separate nano-treatment can be added for special protection against dirt.

Care and maintenance

UHPC is an extremely durable material which requires minimal care. However, its surfaces should be occasionally cleaned with water and a cloth. In addition, surface impregnation should be repeated at 5-year intervals. Follow the user instructions provided by the manufacturer of the treatment preparations! Darker tones may eventually lighten somewhat, due to solar UV radiation.

COMPOSITE STONE

Properties

There is almost no limit to the possible variations in colour and granular properties. Engineered natural stone is made of either marble or quartz aggregates, resin, and pigment minerals subjected to a vibrocompression vacuum process. The stone is finished by cutting, grinding and polishing it in the same way as natural stone.

All surfaces are impregnated with stone preservative to improve the product’s durability and increase in lifespan. Impregnation also protects the stone from erosion, preventing penetration by water and dirt, and the formation of ice. In addition, separate nano-treatment can be used to protect against dirt in particular. The polished surfaces may eventually lose some of their lustre due to solar UV radiation and airborne pollution.

WOOD

Properties

Wood is a natural material of varying appearance, strength and other physical properties. Every tree is unique. This means that there are differences between individual trees of the same species. Wood always has natural blemishes and imperfections. As its surroundings change (hot/cold, dry/wet), the internal moisture balance of wood changes; the wood may expand or contract, causing small cracks to form. All of these processes are natural.

Surface treatment

Wood is protected to preserve the wood’s or products’ good properties, while preventing possible damage due to problems such as rot, mould and insects. Even when untreated, wood can last for a long time if provided with sufficient structural protection. Measures for ensuring the long-term preservation of wood include keeping its moisture content below 20% at all times. To reduce the related environmental impact, we protect our wood products chemically, i.e. we use surface impregnation treatment based on natural oil and wax-based products. The treatment should initially be repeated every 2 to 3 years, and at least every 5 years thereafter.

Care and maintenance

Wood is a living, natural material. With proper care, it is durable and has a very long lifespan. Because our wood products come pre-treated with oil or wax, they require minimal maintenance. However, the surfaces should be occasionally cleaned with a cloth. Surface impregnation treatment should initially be repeated every 2 to 3 years, and at least every 5 years thereafter. Follow the user instructions issued by the manufacturers of oil and wax preparations!

GILDING, PAINTING, AND BRONZE INSCRIPTIONS AND ORNAMENTATION

Clean gilded and painted surfaces carefully by wiping them. Do not use a brush or pressure washer. Follow the general instructions for cleaning bronze lettering and ornamentation. Follow the user instructions provided by the manufacturer of the cleaning preparations!

GENERAL ISSUES

In order to maintain the product warranty, it is very important that you follow the manufacturer’s product care instructions given in the ”Care and Maintenance” guidelines. If you have any questions about the proper maintenance procedures, contact Absentus’s customer support (info@absentus.com)

We recommend the use of oil-based candles with our products.
